Othello
OTHELLO
Written by William Shakespeare

Presented at Yale School of Drama
It is 1570, and Venice is on the brink of yet another war to hold Cyprus. As the Duke and Senate prepare for battle, the general Othello, a Moor, is marrying Desdemona, a senator’s daughter, on the down low. But the wedding doesn’t stay secret for long. Iago, one of Othello’s officers and a brother-in-arms is stung at being passed over for promotion and so retaliates, using society’s bigotry and Othello’s own honest nature against him. In Cyprus, away from the prying eyes of Venice, Iago’s manipulation leads Othello down an unthinkable path. Shakespeare’s most intimate tragedy, Othello asks us to confront the ever-shifting issues of race, gender, religion, and of our very conceptions of selfhood.
